Our Story — James Oxford

Why we started. James Oxford began in 2001, out of a small frustration and a simple idea. The frustration: most menswear is designed for men in their twenties and sold to everyone else. The cuts assume a body you had thirty years ago. The fabric looks better lit on a screen than it does in your hand. And a good half of it is built to be thrown away by spring. The idea: dress the man who already knows what suits him — and who would rather own eight good things than forty passable ones.

How we choose. Twenty-five years on, every piece still has to pass the same test before it goes on the site. Would a man still want to wear this in three years? That one question rules out a great deal. An item whose neckline gapes after a month does not make it in. Neither does a trouser that looks sharp on a mannequin and pulls at the thigh the moment you sit down, or a fabric that pills at the elbow before the season is out. What survives is a smaller range than most shops carry. That is deliberate.

The details nobody mentions. Nobody compliments you on a well-finished hem. But you notice it, every time. A collar that holds its shape instead of curling. A waistband that holds without digging in. A corduroy with enough depth in the rib that it still catches the light in March. A knit that sits flat under a coat rather than bunching at the shoulder.

Who we dress. Men who have stopped trying to look like anyone else. Men who want to walk out of the house feeling put together without having spent twenty minutes on it. Who have a wedding, a walk, a Tuesday, and would like one wardrobe that covers all three without embarrassment. We are a British brand and we dress for a British autumn: rain that arrives without warning, houses that are colder than they should be, and the particular pleasure of a coat that does its job.

Thank you for being part of this amazing journey.
